CRICKET HUTTON NOT IN TEST TEAM
May To Be Captain (N.Z. Press Association— Copunnhn LONDON, JiL« Len Hutton, England’s cricket cantL is out of the side to meet South Afw in the first test, because of lumbaao pT.? May will captain the team. B ' eter May’s Surrey team-mate, K. Barring gets his first cap for the match hE?S ning at Trent Bridge, next Thursday. June 9.
The team chosen today is: P. B H Ma. (Surrey, captain). T. E. Bailev (Esswi R. Appleyard (Yorkshire). K. Ban-inn™ (Surrey). D. C. S. Compton (Mlddffit? T. G. Evans (Kent). T. W. GraS (Gloucestershire), D. Kenyon (Wnr™Z shire). J. B. Statham (LancSSS F. H. Tyson (Northamptonshire)} H. Wardle (Yorkshire); twelfth man C. A. Milton (Gloucestershire). an *
The chairman of selectors, Mr G 0 Allen, said: ‘‘Hutton is still feeling th» effects of his recent attack of lumhaao and does not consider himself sufficients fit to take part in a five-day test match" Apart from the omission of Hutton and Colin Cowdrey, who is being invalided out of the Royal Air Force with foot trouble and who is right out of match practice, the team is the same as the one which played in the final Sydner test against Australia.
Kenyon and the young batting star Barrington, may be considered lucky to get their places through the ill-fortum of Hutton and Cowdrey. Hutton had been appointed Captain for all five tests against South Africa, and his absence will undoubtedly be a blow to England. He is England’s most successful captain, and has led his country on 23 occasions.
This week’s match would have enabled him to equal Sir Donald Bradman's fest of leading his country 24 times, and Hutton needs two more appearances as captain to equal the record of Bill Woodfuil (Australia).
CHANGES APPROVED
(N,Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON. June i Most English cricket writers approved the selection of the 24-year-old Surrr batsman, Ken Barrington, in the teaii but some would have preferred the Yorkshire player. Willie Watson. However, all welcomed the choice of Peter May as captain as the substitute for Hutton.
Cowdrey, who has not played in firstclass cricket this season, was left out The changes gave no surprise. Barrington, who was currently top d the batting averages, and Kenyon, wht J was third after May. appeared logical choices as replacements. Kenyon is expected to partner Graveney as opener. Barrington, who was unknown in firstclass cricket until, last season, only received a Surrey county cap last week, but this aggressive young batsman. wh« is also a fine close wicket fieldsman has been been widely expected make the England team this year.
