RACING GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES MAY GO TO SILVER ARCHER

“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND, June 3. The best hurdlers in the Dominion will contest the £3500 Great Northern Hurdles at the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. The course, of two miles and a half and 10 flights, is a stem test at the best of times. Tomorrow it promises to be particularly severe. The ground was well soaked with heavy rain near the middle of the week, and fierce squalls today kept it very soft and wet. The forecast is for further showers.

None of the runners is more at home in heavy ground than Silver Archer, and a good gallop yesterday and worsening of the going in the meantime brought him strongly into favour' Silver Archer is seven. Success for one of his age is well overdue, because the last seven-year-old to score was Bramble Song in 1946. Bramble Song was owned and trained by A. Winder, who also prepares Silver Archer.

Silver Archer has lOst 41b, which is 111 b more than he carried into third place last year. He will be ridden by W. O. Ensor, who was successful on Kauri Pine in 1949.

The Te Awamutu gelding, Jutland, has captured the imagination of racegoers with brilliant winning displays in »'four of his five starts over hurdles, and indications are that he will be the favourite. It is probable that he will fry to lead from start to finish. Silver Archer’s chance may depend on how close he can keep behind Jutland in the running. If Jutland wins he will complete a hat-trick for five-year-olds, which won four out of the last six contests. Jutland has lOst 41b. The last of. his age to score with as much weight was Kauri Pine, which had lOst 81b. Comishman was five when he won from start to finish with lOst 31b in 1951.

Solar Mist (from Awapuni), Test Flight (from Invercargill), and Pictavia Boy (from Te Aroha) are other well-qualified contenders.

A Real Stayer Solar Mist is at the top of the handicap with the steadier of lOst 131 b. He was successful with 9st 111 b last year. Solar Mist is a real stayer, at a high peak of fitness; and in the hard test of stamina which is likely, he should shine.

The winning fastest gallop since the race was made two miles and a half in 1907 was Solar Mist’s 4min 34 3-ssec. It seems hardly possible that the race will be run in faster time tomorrow. The biggest weight carried tp victory since 1907 was list 51b, under which Makeup scored in 1933. The double will be on the Great Northern Hurdles and the Cornwall Handicap, of £lBOO, run over a mile and a quarter. A limit field of 20 runners is almost certain in the Cornwall Handicap, because eight horses were balloted out to reduce the field to the safety number, and they will re-enter the field if there are scratchings. Elixir, Corolu, Highland Sandy and Sir Nicholas may be the hardest to beat.

Corolu and Elixir are two of the first three in the handicap with Ost 51b and Bst 121 b, respectively, in between is Master Proven with 9st 21b. Most likely, Elixir will start from No. 6. It is a favourable position in a mile and’ a quarter at Ellerslie,, where there is a short run before the first turn. Elixir likes wet ground, and he looked right on the verge of winning form again when, fresh from a spell, he finished fourth over seven furlongs at Te Rapa
