ARTICLE IN “CANTA”

INQUIRY BEING MADE The propriety of some parts of an article headed “Capping Review” in the latest issue of “Canta,” the fortnightly newspaper of the Canterbury University College Students’ Association, has been questioned within and outside the college, and its publication is now being investigated. In the passages complained of—about nirte inches of print—the author, “Bim.” describes the activities of a hypothetical couple in capping week. Asked about the college council’s views on the terms of the article, the chairman (Mr D. W. Bain) said: “I have read the article, and would express the opinion that assumptions drawn in certain passages are exaggerated. As to the method of their presentation and to their publication, inquiries are being made within the college.”

Mr N. W. Kingsbury, president of the Students’ Association, said: “This is the opinion of one contributor to ‘Canta’ and does not reflect either editorial or executive opinion, as it is that of oijly one student. I do not consider the major premise of the article to be valid, and I think the article may be somewhat unfortunate, but a student newspaper should allow freedom of expression, provided it is not obscene.”
