In a first-wicket stand with Endean, which equalled the previous best of the tour, McGiew rarely seemed to be in difficulties. The home side used nine bowlers, but runs came freely on the easy pitch. After Morris was dismissed for 11, wh'en he hit all over the ball in attempting a hook. Favell and Burge added 119 in 100 minutes in a second-wicket partnership. Favell, who was missed at 18 and 19, and twice when 47. pushed a simple catch forward to souare leg after making 74 (including three sixes and four fours. Then Benaud and Maddocks became associated in a valuable partnership which defied the many bowling changes until Benaud was bowled by Crossley after an aggressive innings. AUSTRALIA
