BOXING

O’LEARY BEATS LOVEDAY AT TIMARU (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, June 2. Jack O’Leary (Wellington), beat Owen Loveday (Waimate) in a professional middleweight boxing contest at Timaru tonight. There was keen public interest. In the process of making a grandstand finish, Loveday was caught in the twelfth round with a left hook that dropped him. He was so dazed that he came to his feet and was trying to shake hands when he received another right to the jaw and the referee awarded the bout to O’Leary on a technical knock-out. Loveday forced the fight throughout but the more experienced O’Leary appeared always to be in command.
