The Canterbury mountaineer, Mi Norman Hardie, who was in the Brit ish team which has conquered Kan

chenjunga, is a son of Mr and Mrs G. Hardie, of Otipua road. Timaru Mr Hardie has been in Britain for '->ur or five years. Mr Hardie is a graduate in mechanical engineering of Canterbury University College, and before going overseas'was with the-Ministry of Works in Wellington. Last year he was a member of the

New Zealand Alpine Club’s expedition to the Barun Valley, where he i reached the summit of Pethangste j ( 22,0.80 ft) with Mr Brian Wilkins, Dr. j Michael Ball, a British climber, and a i Sherpa. He also made a notable crossing of a new pass with three Sherpas. Mr Hardie joined the Kanchenjunga expedition as the climber in charge of the oxygen equipment. While in England Mr Hardie married Miss Enid Hurst, the daughter of Mrs V. M. Hurst, of Christchurch. She 1following her husband to India this year, and the couple hope to return to New Zealand about the end of th* year. The war interfered with the plan.* ,of a Canterbury alpine party, which i had planned to tackie Kanchenjunga ! in 1940.
