U.N. Sub-Committee On Arms

(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 1. The Five Power Disarmament Subcommittee met privately for two and three-quarter hours at United Nations headquarters today and then adjourned indefinitely after what the Soviet delegate, Mr Arkady Sobolev, described as a “not very successful meeting.” Mr Sobolev told reporters that it was unsuccessful in his view because the sub-committee declined to accept his suggesaion that it meet again on June 6 to go into a substantive debate on the Soviet proposals made on May The sub-committee comprises Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, France and Canada. The Soviet proposals of May 10 in addition to outlining a disarmament programme also called for the withdrawal from Germany of all the Four Occupying Powers, for the dismantling of military bases on foreign territories, for the settling of Far Eastern disputes “in conformity with the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” and for the abandonment of “propaganda for a new war.”
