HOTEL HOURS IN N.Z.
MOVE FOR TRIAL OF 10 P.M. CLOSING
PETITION CIRCULATED IN CENTRAL OTAGO (New Zealand. Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 27. A move is afoot to make Central Otago a “guinea pig area’’ for trying out 10 o’clock closing of hotels. Originating at Alexandra, the proposal has been launched by the sending out of petitions to' all hotels in the Central Otago licensing district. It is suggested that signatories ask the Government to give immediate consideration to adopting licensing hours similar to those introduced in Sydney.
The petition, in part, states: “It is the plea of us, the petitioners, that an improvement in the existing Licensing Act, 1951, is imperative, and that Central Otago could be used to determine whether the success claimed for the 10 o’clock closing now in force in Sydney would be repeated in New Zealand, and that some such measure must be adopted before more civilised drinking habits can be developed.” Space is provided on the petition for the names of signatories, their occupations, addresses, and witnesses signatures.
