ATTEMPT TO REOPEN COAL MINE
DAMAGED SITE AT DENNISTON (From Out Own Reporter)
WESTPORT. May 26. An attempt is to be made by the Cascade (Westport) Coal Company to resume operations at its mine at" the rear ol Denniston which has been idle since suffering severe flood damage in February.
At the monthly meeting ol the Buller County Council on Tuesday a request was received from the company to put the road in order from the back of Denniston to the mine. The engineerclerk (Mr C. F. Schadick) said that the damage to the road had been extensive and repairs could not be carried out without a grant from the Mines Department or Coal Mines Amenities Council.
The road had been used for taking miners to and from work, but it would be a different matter if it was used for transporting coal from the mine. Previously coal had been conveyed to the railhead in the Buller Gorge by seven miles of fluming, said Mr Schadick.
The mine, which produced some of the best grade coal in New Zealand, was worked for the company by a party of 17 men before the flooding caused them to abandon it.
