WOMAN OVERCOME BY GAS
NEIGHBOUR’S CALL SAVES LIVES (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 27. Two elderly women would probably have died from gas poisoning today if a neighbour had not decided to call for a talk. The neighbour found both women lying unconscious in their beds in the upstairs section of a house at 1 Belmont terrace, Remuera, and called the police.
Mrs Elizabeth Thompson, who owns the house, was taken to the Auckland Hospital after two policemen had reyived her with artificial respiration. Miss R. Sutherland, of Levin, a relative of Mrs Thompson, recovered in the fresh air and did not have to go to hospital.. The police found that Mrs Thompson and Miss Sutherland, who had arrived to stay for the week-end, had put some stew and vegetables on a gas ring in the lower part of the house. They had decided to rest on the beds upstairs until the tea cooked and both dropped off to sleep. The pipe connected to the ring slipped out of the socket and the fumes filtered through the house.
