NEWS FOR WOMEN N.Z. Loyalty Impressed Lady Vivien Younger

(Special Correspondent NJZJP.A.)

(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. “New Zealanders are extremely loyal to Britain and we don’t do nearly enough to foster or appreciate that fact,” Lady Vivien Younger told an Edinburgh meeting today. She has just returned from a visit to the Dominion, bringing a personal letter from the Mayor of Dunedin to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. “New Zealanders always think of Britain as ‘Home,’ and I think it is a great mistake on our part that we don’t make more of our New Zealand visitors for they are so proud of our common ancestry and are only too anxious to maintain a permanent relationship with us,” she said. Lady Vivienne Younger, who is the wife of Mr J. W. Younger, of Edinburgh, was born in Wellington when her father, the Earl of .Lanesborough, was aide de camp to the then Governor-General, Lord Ranfurly. Her recent visit was the first since she left in 1907. She said how much she appreciated

the complete lack of sensationalism in the New Zealand press, which was not always the case in Britain. “There are tremendous opportunities for young .people in New Zealand, providing they are willing to work,” she added. There are no social barriers and each person is taken on his own merit—work brings its own reward. Although the cost of living is high, wages are correspondingly so. Housing, in particular, is an expensive item.

“I was sorry to see much of the best agricultural land being taken up for housing schemes with the result that market gardens have to be some 30 miles out of town, thereby very much increasing the price of their products.” Lady Vivien Younger said one of the highlights of a happy and memorable visit was the opportunity to see the work of the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust, which she had first heard about during a garden cruise organised by the National Trust of Scotland. She w*s amazed at the rapid growth of shrubs in New Zealand.
