DAIRY INDUSTRY COSTS

TALKS SOUGHT WITH MINISTERS

BOARD’S DESIRE FOR “ UNDERSTANDING ”

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 24. A meeting of representatives of the New Zealand Dairy Board, the Prime Minister (Mr Holland), the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake), and the Minister of Finance (Mr J. T. Watts) may soon take place to discuss the stabilisation of dairy production costs.

The chairman of the Dairy Board (T.lr W. E. Hale) told a conference of the dairy section of Auckland Federated Farmers today that the board had asked for a top-level discussion. He hoped the talks would lead to a better understanding. The Prime Minister had said, after his return from overseas in the New Year, that the dairy industry would have to keep a close watch on costs^ - “For 20 years,” said Mr Hale, “we have been advocating the holding of costs in preference to asking for increased prices. In 1939-40, we thought we had an agreement with the then Government, but unfortunately political pressure was too great, and the Government found it could not carry out the suggestions.”
