COMMEMORATION OF EMPIRE DAY
WELLINGTON CEREMONY (New Zealand Press Association) . WELLINGTON, May 24. “Today we have a young Queen on the Throne, and the challenge for us is to make her reign as glorious and as worthwhile in human progress as any in our history,” said the Minister of Justice (Mr J. R. Marshall); at a ceremony today at the statue of Queen Victoria in Kent terrace, Wellington, to commemorate Empire Day. Mr Marshall commended the Empire societies for the revival of Empire Day in a new way. “It is an opportunity to remember the past glories and splendid tradition of the British Empire, and to remind ourselves of the responsibility of the present generation to carry on those traditions,” he said.
Diplomatic and services representatives attended the ceremony, in which a group of schoolchildren also took part. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the statue.
