U.S. Unemployment Figures

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 23. A total of 2.962,000 workers were Unemployed throughout the United States in April out of a labour force of 64,647,000, a Department of Labour Statistics spokesman said today. In January, unemployed numbered 3,347,000 with 10.248,000 people working part-time (less than 35 hours a week).

The official was commenting on a report in the official Soviet newspaper, “Pravda.” that 14,000,000 workers in the United States were either unemployed, or partly out of a job, in January. The “Pravda” report was “completely misleading,” he said, as it had obviously added the two figures without taking account of the fact that almost 70 per cent, of those working part-time did so out of preference.
