CARDINAL SEGURA GRAVELY ILL

(Rec. 8 p.m.) SEVILLE, May 23. Pedro Cardinal Segura, Archbishop of Seville, and an outspoken critic in religious matters of General Franco’s regime, lay dangerously ill in his palace in Seville today. The 74-year-old Cardinal, who is reputed to be the most outspoken man in Spain, received the last Sacraments last night. Later he was reported to have rallied and passed a “fairly good night,” but at noon today doctors said nis condition had grown worse. Cardinal Segura has not hesitated to criticise the present regime for what he has termed its insufficient activity in fighting “the advance of Protestantism.” Cardinal Segura was Primate of Spain from 1927 to 1931, when the Spanish Republican Government deported him.
