PRIVATE USE OF ATOM ENERGY
Firms May Get Access To Secret Data (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 22. The United States Atomic Energy Commission today proposed a regulation under which nrivate users of atomic energy would be given access to secret information. Interested parties have 30 days in which to give their views to the commission. Under the “access permit” programme, restricted data may be made available to firms if they can show a potential use of the information in their businesses. The rule does not apply to military atomic information. The applicant must undergo full security clearance. If he passes all tests, he will receive permission to study the secret data that pertains specifically to his business for a limited period. The commission inaugurated the programme to get private interests started in the atomic energy field. No Boycott of Schools. — African police patrolled New Brighton and other African townships outside Port Elizabeth yesterday when a threatened boycott of schools was due to start. But no incidents were reported and there was a normal attendance at most schools.—Cape Town, May 23.
