RETIREMENT FROM SEA
SENIOR CAPTAIN OF UNION COMPANY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 23. After nearly 47 years at sea, Captain W. Whitefield, senior captain of the Union Steam Ship Company, retired today. After visiting his birthplace at Gore, Captain Whitefield will leave for South Australia, where he has bought almost 2000 acres of virgin land, which he hopes "to turn into a sheep farm. Captain Whitefield’s first command was the Koromiko. Since then he has served on every run operated by the company. He became captain of the Aorangi after her refit in IM4, and stayed with her until the ship went to the Glasgow breakers in 1953. Since then Captain Whitefield has been a relieving captain.
