EXPORT OF DAIRY PRODUCTS
MARKETING COMMISSION’S ACTIVITIES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 23. In the first six months of the 1954-55 season, from August 1, 1954, to January 2, 1955, the Dairy Products Marketing Commission bought 212,067 tons of dairy products for export at a cost of £49,120,000. For the same period in 1953-54 and 195253, the respective totals and values were 209,357 tons at £49,871,000, and 214,766 tons at £49,980,000. Sales of New Zealand butter in markets other than the United Kingdom have been larger than in any previous postwar season, totalling 22,146 tons up to the end of April. The largest individual quantities were 10,376 tons to the Soviet Union, 4489 tons to Germany, and 2061 tons to Czechoslovakia. Varying quantities went to 43 other destinations. Sales of New Zealand cheese to markets other than the United Kingdom totalled 4673 tons up to the end of April, including some quantities supplied to the Continet from the Ministry of Food’s stocks. The largest individual quantities were 1147 tons to Germany, 1000 tons to Canada, and 871 tons to the United States of America. Further payments for this season’s milk powders and casein would be made in due course from the sales realisations, which had been at a higher level than the advances paid to date. 'Milk powder sales have continued steadily. About half of this season’s export production of casein is being shipped under various contracts. The remainder has been taken up readily, and production for Che season is almost completely sold.
