Canterbury Kennel Club Holds Its Mid-Year Show

A demonstration of an obedience trial by a highly-trained springer spaniel was an unusual innovation at the annual mid-year show of the Canterbury Kennel Club on Saturday at the Addington Show Grounds. The spaniel, owned by Mrs K. C. Cooper, of Ashburton, has been successful in many gun dog field trials. Enthusiastic dog owners watched with interest while the dog displayed its intelligence, patience, and unusual ability. , . The show attracted large entries, and classes were well filled. Many new members of the club showed dogs for the first time, and there was keen competition in the novice and puppy classes. Exhibitors had come frpm Gisborne and Picton, as well as from Otago and many country districts in Canterbury. Lesser-known breeds that created considerable interest included a chow-chow, an Old English sheep dog, and smooth-coated miniature dachshunds.

The best dog in the show was T. H. Hodge’s cocker spaniel, Mansfield All Black. The runner-up was a smooth-coated fox terrier, Tyncdale Try Again, owned by R. N. Elliott and Mrs Elliott. This dog was also the best puppy in the show. The judge was Mr E. A. Hopkins. Results were:—
