FAILURE TO MAKE TAX RETURNS

FIVE DEFENDANTS FINED TOTAL OF £165 (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 18. One defendant was fined £75, three were fined £25, and one was fined £l5 when they were charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr Stewart Hardy,' S.M., with failing to make returns of income for the year ended March 31, 1954. Noel Francis Morrison had been prosecuted last year for failing to make returns for the two previous years, and had had warning letters about not filing a return for the last year, said Mr J. R. Mills, prosecuting for the Inland Revenue Department. L. D. Riddell, a clerk in the department, said the defendant owed more than £450 for taxes and social security charges to the department for years preceding that on which the current charge was based. The Magistrate fined Morrison £75. William George Aitken, Raymond Francis and Son, Gordon McKinnon. Will Francis Mills, and William Ronald Sangster, were each fined £25. Pohi Rophia was fined £l5. The Court was told that Rophia was in credit to the amount of £5 12s Id to the department, but had never furnished income returns.
