CRICKET WEST INDIANS 494 FOR SIX

RECORD STAND FOR SEVENTH WICKET

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) BARBADOS, May 18. The West Indies cricketers, D. Atkinson and J. Depeiza, today established a world record seventh-wicket partnership for first-class matches. They have so far put on 348 runs in the fourth test match against Australia. Atkinson and Depeiza batted all day and were still unconquered at stumps. Atkinson is 215 and Depeiza 122. At the end of the fourth day’s play, the West Indies were 494 for six in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 668. The home side needs only 25 more runs to avoid the follow-on. Atkinson, who is captaining the West Indies, attacked the bowling from the start of play today. He was untroubled by Australia's fast bowlers, and he completely mastered the spin attack. SOUTH AFRICANS OUT FOR 268 MATCH AGAINST CAMBRIDGE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 18. South Africa’s touring cricketers were dismissed for 268 by a cosmopolitan Cambridge University side on the opening day of their match today. The South Africans received the best start of their tour so far when McGlew (85) and Waite (78) put on 137 in 152 minutes for the opening partnership. But the vulnerability of the middle batting was again exposed when four wickets fell for 53 runs and the tourists’ last wicket tumbled in the final over of the day. The Indian off-spinner Swarajit Singh, who bowled in a blue turban, returned the best figures, claiming five wickets for 73 runs. tOreS ‘ SOUTH AFRICA First Innings D. J. McGlew, b Singh .. .. 85 J.
