TROTTING Legislate, Don Hall For Forbury Park Double
Legislate and Don Hall are likely to be among the favourites for the Southland Handicap and the Peninsula Handicap respectively, the doubles races on the final day of the Forbury Park
Trotting Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. This meeting will end the trotting season in Otago and Southland. Legislate was having only his second start for the seasop. when he won the Papakaio Handicap .at Oamaru last Saturday. Owned at Rakaia by Mr H. E. Cook, Legislate showed considerable promise last season, and now that he has struck form, he should win again at his next start or two. Legislate has improved considerably in recent weeks, and it will be surprising if he fails to show up. Probably one of the most difficult for him to beat tomorrow will be Kingsdown Direct, a member of W. R. Butt’s team. The Josedale Grattan gelding showed speed to finish fifth in the C. L. Ayson Handicap at Oamaru last Saturday after losing ground early. He impresses as a better stayer than a sprinter, and the distance of tomorrow’s race should suit him better than that of the Oamaru race. All In was beaten in the last stride by Gay Cobra in 'the Oamaru sprint race. He was far from disgraced, as he had lost ground early- With a favourable run again tomorrow, he will have prospects of reaching a place. Marshall Foi, which has finished second at his three most recent appearances, is due for a win.- If started in this race—he is also engaged in the Pacific Handicap—he will be entitled to respect. Albert Hall ran a fair race for fourth in the Oamaru sprint, after covering extra ground when approaching the straight. He looks a likely improver. Vierosa, third at Oamaru, Trueco, Final Glow, and Sir Roger are others expected to add interest to a very open race, in which preference may be shown for Legislate, Kingsdown Direct, and All In. The Second Leg Although Don Hall finished only fifth in his race on the first day of the meetifig, he will be among the favourites for the second leg of the double, the Peninsula Handicap. The speedy Whipster three-year-old is one of the best horses of his age, and even from 24 yards tomorrow, his prospects, must be highly regarded. Air Command is likely to show improvement as a result of his race on the first day of the meeting. He was well back early in a two-mile event, but finished on in great style for sixth. That was Air Command’s first start for the season, and he should have benefited from it. Count Grattan was an impressive winner from a long handicap mark a fortnight ago. He will start from the front mark tomorrow, and will have a great chance. On his day, he is more than useful, and on a firm track he will take beating. Signet Ring, which has shown fair form at times, could surprise. The Direct Heir gelding has a useful turn of speed.
Master Tony has raced well lately, and another bold showing can be expected from him. He will be bracketed
with Captain King, which would be hard to beat on a soft track. Lodestar and Invicta are expected to do best of the others. Barravey will probably be favourite for the Railway Handicap, the main race on the programme for trotters. The Light Brigade gelding finished third in a break a fortnight ago, and was disqualified. With a more favourable run tomorrow, he should win, as he has morfe stamina than most others in the race. Caliph has shown more than average ability in his races this season, ana the son of Henry of Navarre and Lilian Bond may extend Barravey. He. too, is a fine stayer. A win for him would be most popular. Flammula should be* improved by her race a fortnight ago, when she disappointed by breaking with three furlongs to run. She is one of the most promising trotters in commission, and should be, prominent. Kevin, Madam Grattan, Pylon, and Metropole are others expected to show to advantage.
