SMART MILE BY DECLARE

TRIAL FOR RACE AT WASHDYKE Any possible failure by Declare to make a bold showing in the Elloughton Handicap at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will probably be attributed to lack of stamina, certainly not to lack of fitness. His final trial for the first leg of the double at Washdyke was a mile on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. In a high, gusty northeasterly wind he recorded Imin 44 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. He was ridden by his race jockey, A. J. Stokes. Michael Brierly, which may be one of Declares opponents in the Elloughton Handicap—he has an alternative engagement in the Rangitata Handicap—was one of the most impressive of the others tried over a mile. Ridden by R. W. Gould, he closed on Ngapunawai (B. Parsons) inside tiie last furlong, and the stablemates finished the mile on terms in Imin 46sec, the last half in 51sec. Bosky (T. J. Smith) trailed Demijour (R. E. Johnstone) and Ballast (E. G. Low) until well into the straight in their mile trial, and then ran clear to finish a length and a half in front. He recorded Imin 48 2- The pace slackened in the straight, and the last half-mile took 54 3Johnstone has Demijour in first-class order for his first run in open company at Washdyke. Dan (N. Eastwood) and Poilu (N. F. Davison) ran from the mile in Imin 46 2- the last half taking 52sec. Iroquoi (M. J. Wadley) and Pinnacle (N. Bonney) were, on terms, a length clear of Artful King (A. J. Williams), ending seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 54sec. Iroquoi is holding her condition, and has a good chance to improve a promising record in the Rosewill Hack Handicap at Washdyke. Relinquish (A. J. Stokes) and Rio Negro lE. G. Low) galloped six furlongs keenly in Imin 19 4-ssec and took 52 l-ssec for the last half-mile. They finished the trial on terms. Pleasing Sprint Lord Rowallan (M. J. Wadley) gave Assembly (A. J. Stokes) three lengths’ start from near the home turn after starting from the half-mile and finished on terms in 49sec. It was a first-class sprint in the conditions. Sherpa (R. W. Gould) completed his •work by sprinting half a mile in 52 l-ssec. Pat’s Treasure and Boissier Boy took 53 4-ssec. Ridden by his trainer, M. Ryan, Le Roi did well to stay alongside Beau Chat (B. Parsons) while running half a mile in 51 4- Le Roi gave trouble after going on to the track with another rider up, but moved off without delay for his trainer. Cardinal King (F. H. Skelton) made a better impression than Elfin Ways (M. D. Alexander) and Agitate (A. J. Stokes) in their run from the half-mile. Cardinal King finished with a short lead, but going well, in 52 l-ssec. Agitate had to be shaken up to hold her position over the last furlong. Her recent race form has been disappointing. Fulgent (D. F. Coombe) gave Detroit (B. S. Finlayson) a good start from the half-mile, and was at his girth at the finish. Fulgent recorded 52sec and finished clear of Mandrake (T. J. Smith) and Bon Soir (F. H. Skelton). Smuggles (B. McDonald) sprinted her half-mile in 53 4-ssec, Shoal (W. Hanlin) in 52sec. Bagpipe (N. Eastwood) was running on a neck behind Mimbar (W. Quill) and just ahead of Jimmy Flash (N. Bonney) ending half a mile in 51 l-ssec. It was a smart sprint in the high wind. Gold Scheme (G. H. Styles) and Sir William (C. McDonald) finished their work by sprinting half a mile on the plough in 52 4-ssec. Demand (R. W. Gould) ran home from the six furlongs on the plough in Imin 19 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. Marette (D. J. Thistoll) sprinted five furlongs in lipin 7 l-ssec, the final three in 39 3Spike Jones (J. W. McDonald) had three runs over the pony hurdles at a strong pace. He jumped cleverly. Alb (McDonald) went twice over the pony hurdles without putting a foot wrong. Sole Mio (J. Meikle) jumped the two pony flights at a first attempt, but refused to repeat the effort. He has changed hands and is now being trained by J. R. Shaw for Mr L. W. Timperley.
