FESTIVAL OF TALENT

SHORT ENTERTAINMENT WELL RECEIVED Last night’s competitors in the fif-teen-minute entertainment at the Festival of Talent conducted by the Christchurch Competitions Society received three curtain calls from a large and enthusiastic audience. It was no surprise, therefore, when this competitor, the Santa Rosa Club was awarded first place by the panel of judges. Speaking for the judges, Miss Molly Randle said that all the entertainments had been well worth while and the judges had enjoyed them all. She con-/ gratulated all those taking part. In the chief piano solo J. McLaughlin won another award. The judge, Mr Keith Newson, said that he had already commented on Mr McLaughlin’s outstanding ability, but he would also like to commend the second place winner, Miss B. Frew, on her undoubted musical ability and determination—she had entered for all classes for which she was eligible. The soprano test was won by Miss H. Smith, of Kaiapoi. Mr Hamilton Dickson, vocal judge, said this had been a very good class and three recalled competitors had all sung well. Miss Smith had given a colourful performance and rhythmic sense had stood her well in handling a difficult song. Two fancy dancing glasses are listed for the Repertory Theatre this morning and the competitive side of the festival will finish tonight with a concert programme of finals at the Repertory Theatre. The festival will close with demonstration concerts at the Civic Theatre to-morrow afternoon and evening.
