TROTTING Chance For Trueco In Main Oamaru Handicap

The promising three-year-old Trueco will be a firm favourite for the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap, the main handicap race and first leg of the double at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. There has been some rain in recent weeks in Oamaru, and the track has benefited considerably. The outlook is favourable, and the track should provide good going. At his most recent appearance, Trueco created a good impression when he finished too well for Marshall Foi and Kingsdown Direct in the J. McCloy Memorial Handicap at Methven on April 23. On that occasion, he paced the two miles in 4min 29sec—a smart effort for a horse in his class on the Methven track.

Raced by Mr R. H. Rattray and trained at Templeton by D. G. Jones, Trueco is a good type of gelding by Light Brigade from Regalare. He has improved with every race this season, and should develop worthwhile form.

Most opposition to Trueco tomorrow may come from the Oamaru-owned Adan. The Dillon Hall gelding proved his ability to master two miles when he finished third to Lynberne and Marshall Foi, both of which received 36 yards, in the Cheviot Cup Handicap at Rangiora on March 19, and paced the distance in 4min 22 l-ssec. Tomorrow, at Oamaru, he will be well placed on the front mark, and, with a favourable trail, should be prominent at the finish. Useful Bracket

The Washdyke trainer, J. M. Bain, will be represented by two useful pacers in New Idea and Nil Desperandum. New Idea finished a good fourth in the Renown Handicap at Forbury Park last week. A repetition of that effort would earn her some of the stake at Oamaru.

Nil Desperandum’s driver apparently mistook the number of rounds in last week’s race, and eased the horse up with five furlongs to run. He was not afterwards a possibility and finished well back. Nil Desperandum paced two sound races at the Addington Easter meeting. It will not surprise if he races well. The other horses on the front mark make little appeal, and the best of them may be Triple Crown, which finished a fair fifth in the J. McCloy Memorial Handicap at Methven last month. At times, Triple Crown’s form has been impressive, and he could surprise.

Golden Marino may be a better prospect. The Lucky Jack mare finished a fair third in the Renown Handicap at Forbury Park last week. Roving Gypsy has raced well on previous trips to Oamaru, and will only need'to begin smoothly to have prospects. Reyleen Hall and Bedivus are others likely to enter calculations, but preference will probably be shown for Trueco, Adan, and New Idea. The Second Leg

There have been few more impressive graduates from maiden company in recent months than Battalion, which will be at restricted odds in the Papakaio Handicap, the second leg of the Oamaru double. Battalion is a three-year-old gelding by Light Brigade from Anita Patch. He is trained at Methven by H. R. Henderson for Mr P. A. Watson. He should add further lustre to the record of the family founded by Purple Patch.

Three other three-year-olds, Super Brigade, Banjo, and Great Dillon, may offer most opposition to Battalion. Super Brigade was one of the most promising two-year-olds of last season, and won at his only appearance this season. That was in the Winton Juvenile Stakes, when he was not troubled to beat Dame Sybil and Court Talk after leading all the way. If Super Brigade races up to his best, be could be Battalion’s strongest oppon-

Banjo has not raced since he won the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes in March. The Ydung Bob gelding is a smart pacer, and he should be prominent all the way tomorrow. Great Dillon was a big disappointment at Methven. At times, his efforts have been above average, but on other occasions only fair. If he races well tomorrow, he may be placed. Southland Prospects

Carden a, a member of J. Malcolm’s Nightcaps team, was a winner at Waino recently. He received a poor run, or he would probably have won outright instead of dead-heating with Friendly Hall. Cardena has been only once unplaced in five starts this season, and she may extend her record in the next few weeks.

Atarau is another southland pacer with useful form. He has had a win and a placing from his two starts. A sound performance is expected from him.

Reality, a failure at Methven, and Dryden Lad are others expected to race well.

Camille, a very easy winner at Amberley at the end of last month, will be a short-priced favourite for the C. L. Ayson Handicap, the main sprint race. The half-sister to Soangetaha is a smart sprinter, and from No. 5 on the front mark, she may lead throughout the race.

All In was most unlucky in his race at Methven last month. He will be solidly supported tomorrow. The Indianapolis gelding is trained on the Oamaru course, and he is reported to have worked well lately. His trainer, F. Oliver, has Dark Echo and Fairy Dell engaged at Epsom tomorrow, so an outside rider will be engaged for All In.

Tapestry won at Hororata in January at her only start for the season. If she races as well again tomorrow, she may extend Camille.

Kingsdown Direct showed speed to finish fifth in his race at Forbury Park last Saturday. If he begins more smoothly tomorrow, he may extend the favourites.

Kyle Lass, Lady Belmer, and Gay Cobra are three capable sprinters expected to race well from the front mark. The handicapped horses do not make much appeal, and Marshall Foi may do best of them.

Waikaura Handicap Russell Grattan, an impressive winner at Methven for his Prebbleton trainer, A. M. Purdon, is expected to win again in the Waikaura Handicap. Russell Grattan has a fair turn of speed, and now that he has struck form, he should continue to race well The consistent Prestbury has not trotted a really bad race in recent months, and he will be popular with place investors.

Last season’s New Zealand Trottin® Stakes winner. Highland Flame, will be making her first appearance since that race and great interest will be taken in her performance. If she has made the improvement expected of her in the last 12 months, the halfsister to Flammula could cause a minor upset.

t- Q ..Contrary. Indian Queen, Jimmy Pride, and Jocoly are other speedy trotters exoected to add interest to an open race. Selections are:—
