BANKS PENINSULA WALNUT CROP
COMPETITION OF IMPORTS FROM JAPAN Imported Japanese walnuts, which had been landed into store in Christchurch for Is 6d a pound, had made it impossible for Banks Peninsula growers to get a satisfactory offer, or any offer at all, for their walnuts, said Mr D. E. Woodill at a meeting of the executive of the Akaroa Progress Association recently. Mr W. T. Hall said that the walnut imports seemed to be part of the Government’s policy to keep down the cost of living by introducing competition for New Zealand products. Mr D. J. Whitehead suggested that the matter was one for the walnut growers themselves. Some action was desirable, said Mr Woodill, because the walnut crop represented a fairly large source of income for many Peninsula farmers.
