PRICE OF BREAD DELIVERY
FREIGHT CHARGES TOPENINSULA BAYS Excessive freight charges on bread delivered in bulk to Banks Peninsula eastern bays stores from the Akaroa bakehouse were said to be the main reason why the Akaroa baker (Mr J. F. Stokes) was leaving the business at the end of the month when the sub’ ject was discussed at a meeting of-the Akaroa Progress Association’s executive. Unless the baker could be replaced, said Mr W. T. Hall, Akaroa residents would have to get their bread from Christchurch, probably paying 3d or 4d a loaf more, and possibly getting old bread. He .claimed that the New Zealand Railways Road Services was charging Mr Stokes 4d to deliver each 41b loaf to the eastern bays stores. Because of the price order, the stores only paid Id of this, leaving Mr Stokes to find the remaining 3d. This took his profit. A Price Tribunal officer had been investigating the position, said Mr Hall, and it had been suggested that an increase of 2d a loaf to the baker would meet the position. The president (Mr D. E. Woodill) and secretary (Mr F. R. Barbour) were delegated to meet the baker and bread retailers with a view to asking the Price Tribunal for relief.
