FESTIVAL OF TALENT

PIANO SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

Piano scholarships ■in two age groups, 10 and under 12 years and 12 and under 14 years were awarded at the Festival of Talent conducted by the Christchurch Competitions’ Society yesterday. In both classes, the standard had been very high indeed, said the judge Mr Keith Newson, in making his awards. Anne Hyndman, winner of the 10 and under 12, had given an assured performance, and Leonard Beath winner of the second scholarship had displayed fine technique. Mr Hamilton Dickson, vocal judge, complimented the two junior choirs on the exceptionally high standard of their performances, and said his unusually high markings had been fully justified. The festival will be continued today in four halls. Vocal judging will be continued at the Jellicoe Hall and eight elocution classes are listed for the Scottish Hall. National Dancing will be judged at the Caledonian Hall in the morning and piano solos and duets in the same hall in the afternoon. Fancy dancing will be continued at the Repertory Theatre.
