GOLF Canterbury Women Win South Island Tournament

The Canterbury women’s golf team won the South Island elimination tournament fop the Russell Grace Cup and will meet' the South Island finalists at Shirley in October. The tournament concluded on the Waitikiri course yesterday, when Canterbury beat South Canterbury-North Otago by seven games to two. and Marlborough-Nel-son-West Coast beat Otago-Southland by five and a half games to three and a half.

Each year since the competition was inaugurated in 1949, the Canterbury team has been in the final and has won the cup three times. Last year the team was beaten at Miramar by the Poverty Bay team. At the tournament, the Canterbury team beat, in turn, each of the other three teams. The Otago-Southland team and the Marlborough-Nelson-West Coast team tied for second place. After all matches had been decided yesterday. Miss L. Lucas (Nelson), a member of the executive committee of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union, congratulated the winning team and wished it success in the final. All the competitors had, she said, greatly enjoyed the tournament. It was probable, Miss Lucas said, that a change would soon be made in the boundaries of the provinces into which the South Island was divided for the competition. It was proposed to include part of the present South Can-terbury-North Otago province in the Canterbury province, and the remaining part , in the Otago province, and to constitute Southland as a separate province. The change had not yet been finally decided upon, Miss Lucas said. Miss Eileen Nutt, who is Canterbury representative on the executive and who supervised the tournament, thanked Miss Lucas for her congratulations. She expressed appreciation to the Waitikiri club for lending its links for the tournament, and thanked Mr A. R. Blank and the caterers at the club for helpful co-operation. Mrs W. M. Coxhead, for the South Canterbury-North Otago team, and Mrs J. K. Dolan, for the Otago-Southland team, thanked Miss Nutt and all who had arranged the tournament, which had proved so enjoyable.

The Foursomes In the Marlborough-Nelson-West Coast match against Otago-Southland. Miss Risk and Mrs Topliss played very well in their match with two of Otago-South-land’s best match players, Mrs N. Cullen and Miss K. Shand. The match, in which play was consistent on both sides, went to the eighteenth green. Both pairs went out in 37, the scratch score of the course. The Otago players scored birdies at the fifth and at the ninth, and at the seventh Miss Risk skilfully played out of a grass bunker and took the hole in a birdie 4. After being 4 down going to the eleventh, Mrs Dolan and Mrs Anderson (Otago-Southland) won their match gainst Mrs Dyke and Mrs Rowling (Marlborough-Nelson-West Coast) 1 up. A notable feature of this match was the good, steady play of Mrs Rowling. She comes from Motueka and has earned a handicap of 7 on her 16-hole course, which has four holes of more than 500 yards. She has attracted much attention by her consistency throughout the tournament. Although she and her partner met seme trouble with trees, they scored three birdies on the outward journey and turned 3 up. They won the tenth. The Otago players won the next two holes and halved the thirteenth. They lost the fourteenth to be again 3 down. Then the Otago pair fought back and won the next four holes and the match, 1 up. Mrs Sievwright and Miss McCallum secured the third win for Otago-South-land when they beat Mrs Baineaves and Mrs Stevenson, 3 and 2. Mrs Sievwright and Miss McCallum were 4 up at the twelfth. Their opponents won two holes to make the score 2 up in Otago’s favour. At the sixteenth one of the Marlborough-Nelson-West Coast players disqualified herself and her partner bv driving when it was her partner’s turn to do so. This gave Otago the match, 3 and 2. In the Canterbury versus South Canter-bury-North Otago matah Miss Buchanan and Leonie Hillis beat Miss M. Kennard and Miss W. Tizard. 3 and 1, in an unspectacular game. Mrs Edward and Miss Grigg, both very steady on the greens, beat Mrs James and Mrs Mackay. 5 and 4. Mrs Edward and Miss Grigg were out in 39 and were 4 up at the turn. With a birdie at the twelfth they increased their lead. The South Canterbury pair lost a chance of keeping the match alive when they missed a fairly easy putt at the thirteenth. The match ended at the fourteenth, which was halved in bogey figure.

Mrs Andrewes and Miss Murray lost to Mrs Reed and Mrs Paul, who again demonstrated their skill in approaching and particular!}- in putting. The match was square at the turn. The Singles In the singles Canterbury beat South Canterbury-North Otago by 5 matches to 1. Miss Fleming opened her game witn Miss Kennard by scoring birdies at the' first two holes and was gut in 37. the ! scratch score of the course. The match j ended at the fifteenth, which was halved | in birdies. Although Miss Grigg was 4 down at the ! turn against her more experienced op-I ponent. Mrs Paul, she kept the game going to the sixteenth, where Mrs Paul ! won, 3 and 2. In the other match Miss Risk (Marl- . borough-Nelson-West Coast) was out in 38 in her match with Mrs Cullen, who did not reach the high standard of play she had shown in the foursome in the morning. But the game had its bright spots. At the fourth hole Mrs Cullen holed a long chip for an eagje. and Miss Risk, with another neat chip, scored a birdie at. the sixth. Miss Risk was 3 up at the turn and continued to press her advan- ■ tage to win at the sixteenth. Mrs Dyke showed a return to form in her match with Mrs Dolan, which she won 3 and 2, and_Mrs Topliss, out in 39. had a fairly easy win from Mrs Sievwright. The onlv match squared yesterday was that between Mrs Rowling and Miss Shand, and the Marlborough-Nelson-West Coast team which certainly played itself in during the tournament, had two further wins. Mrs Baineaves beat Mrs Anderson after a close game and Mrs Stevenson beat Miss McCallum. 4 and 3. Scores: — Canterbury v. South CanterburyNorth Otago Foursomes.—Misses H. Buchanan and L.
