LOCAL POLLS IN BRITAIN
Labour Loses Seats In Boroughs (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. Voters will go to the polls today in nearly 400 boroughs throughout England and Wales—and politicians will anxiously await the results as a possible guide to the General Election in a fortnight’s time. Today’s polls will be the most important of a week’s local polling in which Labour has so far suffered a net loss of 87 seats out of a total of 1745 filled. The Conservatives are hoping the swing to the Right will be more pronounced in today’s polling for 3670 seats—heralding a Conservative victory in the General Election. A public opinion poll taken by the “Daily Express” claims that the Conservatives are now two points ahead of Labour in public favour—49 per cent, to 47 per cent. But Mr Attlee has rejected prophecies of a Conservative victory and says Labour’s prospects are as good as in 1950, when his party was returned with a majority of seven.
