Keen Interest In Britain
<N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. The new Russian disarmament proposals today replaced the forthcoming General Election as the main topic of conversation in Britain. Most British newspapers welcomed the proposals although many advised caution and mentioned some points on which they said difficulties might be expected. Typical of cheerful headlines were these: The Daily Express”: “brighter and brighter—Peace advance on several fronts.” The “Daily Mail”: “Bulganin eager to talk—His ‘Yes’ expected on Saturday.” The News Chronicle ’ However, under the heading “Kremlin steals Big Four thunder” published an article from the Paris correspondent which said:—“Russia has got in first with what her propagandists in the coming week will call ‘concrete proposals’ for Big Four talks this summer.
