Caravans Preferred To Houses

LONDON. April 26. A survey made in Surrey caravan colonies has revealed that more than half those living in caravans do so simply because they prefer then to a house—not because of any accommodation shortage.

The survey was taken by the Surrey County Council in an attempt to check on the growth of caravan camps in the county. The official report states: “On three sites, about 53 per cent, of those returning forms said they preferred life in a caravan to living in the traditional type of dwelling. “Many caravanners had forsaken traditional dwellings to live in caravans, and in one case a caravanner stated he had vacated a council house for a caravan.”

Hie report stated that two “snags” were found in caravan life. When caravans were less than 20ft apart caravanners could not avoid hearing their neighbours’ radios and other noises, and it was generally agreed by site operators and caravanners that caravan life was not suitable for families with young children.
