When he lost control of his bicycle at the Severn street railway crossing at 10.45 o’clock this morning, a man was thrown in the path of a train and suffered very severe injuries from which he died almost immediately. He was James J. Cook, aged 65, a widower, of Jessop street, Oamaru. Mr Cook’s bicycle jumped a threefoot bank and he landed on his head on the railway line. Within a few seconds he was thrown clear by a goods train entering Oamaru from the south. TWO INJURED IN FALL FROM COAL TRUCK (from Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, April 26. When they fell from a coal truck on the Charming Creek mine railway incline last evening, Catherine Dickson, a widow, of Hector, and her niece, Isabel Cummings, aged 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Cummings, of the Domain, Westport, suffered injuries which necessitated their admission to the Buller Hospital. Mrs" Dickson suffered back and shoulder injuries and the girl severe lacerations to the scalp and back injuries. The condition of both this afternoon was reported to be giving cause for some anxiety. It is believed that Mrs Dickson and Miss Cummings, with two other girls from Westport, Judith Halkett and Colleen Sheehy, had walked along the line and had got on to the truck for a ride down the hill. The truck started to gather speed and Miss Halkett jumped off. but the others stayed on until they were thrown clear as it turned a bend. Miss Sheehy escaped with very slight injuries.
