AWARD OF ROME SCHOLARSHIP
YOUNG ARTIST FROM WANGANUI *Th« Press’* Special Service WANGANUI, April 26. A former Wanganui Technical College student, Mr Walden Tucker, who was failed in painting and drawing in his university entrance examination in New Zealand, has won one of the world’s premier art ‘ scholarships. Mr Tucker has been, awarded the Rome Scholarship for painting, drawing and etching, according to advice received by his mother, Mrs L. Tucker, of Aramoho. The scholarship entails study in Rome. Four of the scholarships are awarded throughout the British Commonwealth every year. The scholarship is for two years, the holder receiving £2OO a year. Mr Tucker left Wanganui in 1952 and has been studying at the Kingston-on-Thames Art School in London for the last two and a half years. Since he has been at the school he has topped his class, which is made up of students from all over the world. In England last October, Mr Tucker won a prize of £lOO in an engraving competition, competing against fullyfledged artists.
