ATTACK ON AIR STATION
ARMED CLASH NEAR LONDONDERRY
„ LONDONDERRY, April 25. Three men tried to shoot their way into the Royal Naval air station at Eglington, near Londonderry, last night, but were driven off by two sentries after a short running battle. The sentries challenged the men on the perimeter of the base. The men made no reply, but instead opened fire. The sentries replied, and a Admiralty spokesman said that about a dozen shots were fired before the three men fled.
The spokesman added that there were no naval casualties.
The air station is only • few miles from the border with the Irish Republic.
After the battle all naval establishments were alerted, and the Northern Ireland Special Constabulary mobilised. An Admiralty spokesman said that the alert had now been withdrawn. Eglington was a key base during the Battle of the Atlantic during World War 11. It is now used primarily as a training school in anti-submarine warfare.
