U.S. Urged To Agree To China’s Offer

President Eisenhower and Mr Dulles, the Secretary of State, held a 40-minute review of world afiairs late today including Communist China’s offer to negotiate a settlement of the Formosa crisis. The meeting was held a few hours after the Senate Democratic leader, Senator Lyndon Johnson, had called on the ."“.ministration to give “careful consideration” to the possibility of face-to-face talks with the Communists on Far East issues. Mr Dulles refused to comment on Mr Chou’s proposal when he arrived at Washington after a five-day holiday, saying only: *1 will think about that after I get to the State Department.” This afternoon Senator Johnson urged the Administration to consider the suggestion by Senator Walter George, Democratic chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, that the United States should be “big enough and great enough to agree to direct talks with Peking. Mr Dulles will have an opportunity to discuss his position at a press conference tomorrow.
