WORLD ESPERANTO ASSOCIATION
ACCEPTANCE BY UNESCO AS CONSULTANT
v Universal Esperanto Association had been accepted in a consultative capacity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation, said the secretary of the Christchurch Esperanto Society (Mr W. S’ on resolutions at the UNESCO general conference in Montevideo in December. The society formed classes for 1955 under the auspices of the Workers’ Educational Association at Canterbury University College on Tuesday. The. UNESCO conference had also commissioned the General Directorate to follow current developments in the use of Esperanto in education, science, and culture, and to this end to cooperate with the association in matters concerning both organisations, said Mr King. A resolution also noted that several member States of UNESCO had announced their readiness to introduce or expand the teaching of Esperanto in their schools and high educational establishments, and requested these member states to keep the DirectorGeneral informed of the results attained in this field.
The UNESCO decisions signified a historical milestone in the development and advancement of the international language, as well as the commencement of a basically new epoch—that of official recognition of Esperanto, Mr King said.
