CEMENT SHORTAGE

CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSES CONCERN

The City Council will draw the attention of the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. J. Eyre) to the present shortage of cement in Christchurch.

The shortage was causing considerable concern, the works committee reported. No doubt the shortage was influenced by the large quantities required for State hydro works at Roxburgh and the introduction of the shipment of cement in bulk from Golden Bay to the North Island. A sufficient supply was necessary to ensure that essential works proceeded and contracts were not delayed. He understood that cement was nor-: mally brought to Christchurch from Golden Bay by trucks, but the trucks had been used lately for carting apple crops, said Cr. T. H. McCombs. A shipload of imported cement intended for Lyttelton had been diverted to New Plymouth.
