COMMANDO UNIT FOR MALAYA

HIGH STANDARD OF FITNESS REQUIRED

Because of the high standard of medical fitness required nearly half the men in the South Island who have applied for service with the Special Air Service Squadron in Malaya have been rejected. An Army spokesman said yesterday that the quality of applicants coming forward had been very good but exacting physical fitness tests had meant that many desirable men had had to be turned away. Recruiting has been continuing steadily ana to date there have been 54 applications. Twenty-six men have been rejected. In Canterbury 19 men have applied to join the squadron and of these nine have been rejeted.
