DOWRY SYSTEM IN GREECE

ATHENS. A controversy is raging around the time-honoured custom that every girl shall bring a dowry to her husband on marriage.
The controversy follows a petition by 17 mayors of communities in the mountainous province of Roumeli, in South-eastern Greece, to Queen Frederika asking her to request the Government to introduce legislation suppressing the need for every unmarried girl to provide her future husband with a dowry.
