SYDNEY CUP ON MONDAY

FINITO WELL BEATEN RISING FAST SHOWED LITTLE DASH (From ths Australian Correspondent of “The Press”) , SYDNEY, April 12. Finito and Rising Fast failed on Monday to cariy on the remarkable run of New Zealand successes in big Australian races. Equal favourites for the Sydney Cup, they were outclassed by an Australian stayer, Talisman, which beat Finito comfortably, with Beaupa third and Rising Fast unplaced. Talisman, a reject from M. McCarten’s stables, won the race very comfortably. He is by Midstream from a good racing mare, Pennywise. Finito ran a good race, but had no chance with the winner, which raced through at the one and .a half furlongs to take the lead from Beaupa. Rising Fast did not raise the hopes of his backers at any stage. His trainer, F. W_ Hoysted, will now consider whether to start him next Saturday in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes or give him a spell and reserve him for the racing in Brisbane in June and July. Rising Fast is not the horse he was in the spring by any means. He has not the same dash either throughout a race or in a finish. In the Autumn Stakes on Saturday, when Prince Cortauld beat him. Rising Fast took a long time to run past Golden Galleon, which made the pace to the three furlongs. Golden Galleon scarcely could be described as a first-class weight-for-age horse. Then Rising Fast was exceedingly hard pressed to hold off Carioca and retain second place. Carioca definitely is not the horse he was. This is not surprising. He is rising eight years, and emerged from virtual retirement to undertake the present campaign.

Prince Cortauld Prince Cortauld continues to be one of the best horses seen in Australia for some i years. Many thought he had been given too much racing in Melbourne, but he ! looked fresh enough when he went to the post for the Autumn Stakes, and he [ proved that he is still at his peak by the [ way he won. 1 Nevertheless, it must be remembered that, if the assessment of Rising Fast and ) Carioca is correct, Prince Cortauld is not ) exactly beating top-class opponents. This detracts slightly from the merit of his performances. Knave is not good enough to beat Kingster. It was proved again when Kingster . won the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Rand- > wick on Saturday. Each time they have ! met, Knave has lost, so that, In the twoL year-old races at least, Australia is hold2 ing her own against the Dominion-bred horses. ) Knave won the grand championship at 1 the Sydney Royal Show during the week. Bloodhorse sections at the show have 7 been built up considerably in recent years, and the competition is fairly good. Knave c won his class and then the championship ribbon.
