1956 RUTHERFORD LECTURE
SIR CHARLES DARWIN TO VISIT N.Z.
Sir Charles Darwin, who was Director of the National Physical Laboratory in England from 1938 to 1949, will visit Christchurch next April after delivering the Rutherford Memorial Lecture for 1956 at Nelson. The time and place of the lecture have been specially chosen to coincide with the centennial celebrations of Nelson College. The first lecture under the Royal Society’s project for a memorial to Lord Rutherford was given in Christchurch by Sir John Cockcroft, Director of the Atomic Energy Establishment at Harwell. Since then other memorial lectures have been given in Canada in 1953, in South Africa in 1954, and this year in India. e During his distinguished career, Sir Charles Darwin has been lecturer in physics at Manchester University, lecturer in mathematics at Christ’s College, Cambridge, Tait Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh University, and Master of Christ’s College before going to the National Physical Laboratory.
