ALCOHOL AND DRIVING
Sir. —Your correspondent in “The I Press” today imputes blame to the police for not discouraging “hopso- 1 mania.” This, I think, is hardly fair. : Apart from shortage of personnel, the ■ police, judging from reports of sundry I investigations, have to contend with « factors not entirely under their control. I suggest that it is within the 1 competence of those who cater for, 1 and, not unnaturally, encourage the ; consumption of beer, to curb exces- ’ sive drinking. Morally, at any rate, the 1 man, or more particularly the youth, who has “one over the eight” is hardly more culpable regarding any subsequent misdeeds than the individual : who, knowing or even suspecting his condition, has contributed to his overindulgence.—Yours, etc., M.T. April 12, 1955.
