HEIR TO THRONE OF YEMEN

PROCLAMATION OF KING’S SON

FAILURE OF ATTEMPTED COUP D’ETAT (Req. 8 pan.) CAIRO, April 11. Imam Ahmed, King of the Yemen, who last week survived an abortive coup d’etat, has proclaimed his 29-yeaar-old son, Seif el Islam el Badr, as heir to the throne of the Red Sea kingdom. The announcement was made at a press conference today by Lieutenant- . Colonel Hussein el Shaffei, Egyptian Minister of Social Affairs, who led the Egyptian goodwill delegation to the Yemen after the recent disturbances there. It was the Emir el Badr who organised his father’s rescue last week after hostile army units led by the Imam’s brother, Abdullah, had forced the 61-year-old King to abdicate. Abdullah, the former Defence Minister, briefly took over the throne; but the Emir el Badr and loyal army units restored the Imam on Tuesday. Abdullah and another brother, Seif el Islam a Bas, were later arrested. Prince el Badr said afterwards that Abdullah had been “driven by his lust for power” to organise a band of army men who fired on the Royql. Palace and “terrorised men and women” in an attempt to topple the Imam from his throne. The Imam Ahmed announced on Thursday that order had been restored and that he had pardoned the I troops who helped the revolt.
