CRICKET WEST INDIES 73 FOR TWO

RAIN INTERRUPTS SECOND TEST

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PORT OF SPAIN. April 11. The West. Indies star batsmen, Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott, were fighting hard to retrieve the early loss of the opening pair at stumps on the first day’s piay in the second test against Australia. Only 85 minutes of play were possible today because of rain. When the bad light stopped play, West Indies had lost two wickets for 73 runs. More than two hours’ play was lost because the groundsmen had failed to cover the area surrounding the pitch and the bowlers’ approaches until the rain had soaked in. A capacity crowd of 26,000 packed the Queen’s Park oval. Stollmeyer won the toss and the West Indies batted on a perfect pitch in hot, humid weather. There were two changes in the Australian team from that which played the first test—Langley and Watson replacing Maddocks and Burge. Australia’s fast opening attack again caused the batsmen trouble. After 22 minutes’ play, during which 20 runs were scored, rain drove the players from the field. Play did not resume until after the tea interval at 4.15 p.m. The Australian team was hooted as it walked out to resume play. There had been a disagreement between the captains at the third wicket inspection at 3.30 p.m.. and the umpires had decided tne ground was unfit for an immediate start.
