LOSS OF TURKISH SUBMARINE

Captain Gaoled For Negligence (Rec. 11 p.m.) ISTANBUL, April 12. Sabri Celebioglu, the commander of the Turkish submarine Dumlumpinar, which sank in the Dardanelles after a collision in 1953, was yesterday sentenced to imprisonment for one year and eight months. A Court at Chanakkale found him guilty of negligence and disregard of regulations in the submarine’s collision with the Swedish freighter Naboland, in which 81 Turkish sailors died in April, 1953. Celebioglu was also fined about £26.

A Turkish Court in 1953 held that Captain Oscar Lorentzon, of the Naboland, was responsible for the disaster, and relatives of the Dumlumpinar victims are claiming damages from the Naboland’s owners.
