TROTTING Silverwood Main Winner At Greymouth Meeting

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH, April 11. In a thrilling finish to the westland Handicap at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s Easter meeting today, Silverwood took the honours by a neck from Pennyfare, with Red Hackle a head away in third place. A photo-finish was called for to decide all three placings. Kierlock and Pennyfare were slowest out, the former losing all chance. Crown Jewel was the early leader from Barney Dillon, Red Hackle, Credulous, Silverwood and Brigadier Grattan.

Credulous took over after two furlongs and made the running from Red Hackle, Crown Jewel, King Bruce, Barney Dillon, Pennyfare, Lille Bolero and Silverwood. Red Hackle took over on the final circuit, and led into the back from Credulous, Barney Dillon, Crown Jewel, Lille Bolero, King Bruce, Charlotte Belle, Pennyfare, and Silverwood.

Red Hackle looked likely to win when he led into the straight, but Silverwood and Pennyfare put in late claims, and Silverwood just got the measure of Red Hackle a few yards short of the post.

Pennyfare finished on well to cut Red Hackle out of second placing. Then followed Lille Bolero, Brigadier Grattan, Crown Jewel, Charlotte Belle and Boomerang. The Westland Handicap was the main race and the second leg of the double. The first leg was won by Nipalong and the winning combination paid £65 9s for £l. Nipalong put up a first-class effort to win the Eclipse Handicap. He received a perfect trail on the fence, behind Local Power, Captain Cash, Rolling Stone, and Palmarie, but was hampered for room along the back. Pulled out sharply with two furlongs to run, Nipalong showed remarkable speed to race up to the leader, Local Power, at the entrance to the straight, and he drew clear to win decisively by a length and a half from the unlucky Synchronise. Local Power tired into third place, three lengths back, just clear of Nona Grattan, Captain Cash, Palmarie, and Provident. The warm favourite, Genghis Khan, and Noble Trail failed to go away, and were soon out of the contest. „ Long Range Wins • san5 an £ < ! ■ t> y e d on under pressure to win the Richmond Handicap from the faster-finishing backmarker, Crystal Star, which made a late run from the rear of the field after being well pocketed With two furlongs to run. ' Sound Barrier, Battle Fling, and Gold Bransen were the leaders with three furlongs to run, but Long Range ran past them soon afterwards and looked to be in for an easy win until Crystal Star made a late run which took him up to within « length and a half of the winner. Battle Fling shaped encouragingly for third., two length, back. dear of Good. Stylish Linda, Gold Bransen, Sound Barrier, and National Globe. Penalised 24 yards for her success in the opening event, Lubra trotted brilliantly in behind the pacemaker. Fifth Brigade, to complete a double in the Otira Handicap. Fifth Brigade quickly made up her handicap to be the leader before the «®d ot three furlongs, and she looked the winner half-way down the straight, but Lubra continued her run to catch the leader a few yards off the post and win by a neck, rath Brigade just hung on to beat the win favourite. Loyal Eagle, by the barest of margins for second. Then came Jean Able, Dan’s Wonder, and Cinderella. Synchronise In Form Making a smarter beginning In his second start. Synchronise gave nothing else a chance in the Easter Handicap. He won by four lengths from Local Power, with Spring Glory finishing well for third, ahead of Palmarie, which was three lengths further back. Then followed Provident, Rolling Stone, Gay Polka, and Genghis. The last-named lost more than 120 yards at the start, and also broke in the running. Local Power r.iade the early running, but then Provident was the pacemaker from Flaring, Palmarie, and Synchronise. Synchronise took over before starting the final circuit, and raced away to a commanding lead. He was untroubled over the last stages of the race. Sound Barrier featured In a thrilling finish with Battle Fling in the Autumn Handicap. Battle Fling looked to have the race In safe keeping with 50 yards to run, but Sound Barrier finished brilliantly to take the honours. He won by half a head from Battle Fling, with threequarters of a length to Stylish Linda, which finished resolutely in the straight. Then cam* Gold Bransen, Humble Pie,

Battle Fling set the pace throughout from Humble Pie, Be Good, and Sound Barrier. Sound Barrier began a run around the leading division from the two furlongs, and gradually wore down the leader in the run to the post. Crown Jewel Succeeds The Au Revoir Handicap produced another exciting finish. Crown Jewel and Line Bolero getting up In the last few outstay the pacemaker. Red Pennyfare failed to go away correctly, and Boomerang stood on the mark. Kierlock began smartest and led Red Hackle, Charlotte Belle, Credulous, Crown Jewel, and Barney Dillon. Red Hackle had Kierlock’s measure with two furlongs to run, and was clear Into the straight from Crown Jewel, with Lille Bolero showing up. Red Hackle just failed to hold on, and Crown Jewel prevailed by half a length from Lille Bolero. Red Hackle was less than a length back, third. Then came Stylish Grattan, Silverwood, Barney Grattan, Nona Grattan, and Kierloqk. The trainers, R. S. Thomson XSound Barrier) and A. D. McCarthy (Kierlock), were each fined £5 for using unauthorised gear. The meeting was held before a large crowd in overcast but fine weather. The track was fast. The winning doubles combination, Nipa-long-SUverwood, returned £65 9s for £l. The totalisator handled on-course £25,298 10s, including £2047 on the double, compared with £28,825 10s on the correjgonding day last year.
