SYDNEY CUP

FINITO SECOND TO TALISMAN

PLUNGE ON RISING FAST FAILS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 11. The New Zealand stayers Rising Fast and Finite, after starting equal favourites, were beaten in the Sydney Cup at Randwick today. Finite was second, but Rising Fast could finish only eighth. The race was won by Talisman, which at one stage was a doubtful starter, with Beaupa, an outsider, third.

The cup was highlighted by a spectacular course plunge on Rising Fast, which from 7 to 1 was backed to touch 3 to 1 favouritism at One stage. Rising Fast then eased to be a 4 to 1 equal favourite with Finito. In six bets alone Rising Fast was supported to win £A25,000. Rising Fast looked a danger half a mile from home when he made a forward move, but his weight told and he dropped out from the home turn. Finito carried some huge bets, including one of £AIO,OOO to £A2OOO. He ran a splendid race, and was wellridden by Neville Sellwood, who won last year’s Sydney Cup. Sellwood settled Finito down behind Rising Fast past the middle of the field. Whenever Rising Fast’s jockey, Reg Heather, made a forward move, Sellwood pushed Finito along, and did not have to leave the rails until the three furlongs, where he drew out to go around the outside. Finito finished gamely, but did not look like catching Talisman, which had been content to remain among the tailenders for most of the race. Talisman moved up to take the lead at the furlong and carried on to win unextended by three lengths. Beaupa held third or fourth place throughout the race. Results:— SYDNEY CUP, Of £12,500 and £5OO Gold Cup. Two miles. TALISMAN 7-4 .. S. Cassidy 1 Finito 8-7 .. N. Sellwood 2 .Beaupa 7-3 .. F. Reys 3 Three lengths; neck. Time,. Smin 29Jsec. Betting: 13 to 2, 4 to 1, 16 to 1. Off-Course Betters Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting today: Doubles races, fourth and sixth. —Advt.
