CHURCHILL GIVES REASONS
Time For Election Preparations
LONDON, April 6. Sir Winston Churchill tonight revealed why he had resigned as Prime Minister—to give his successor reasonable time to prepare for a General Election.
In a letter to the chairman of the Conservative Party at Woodford —Sir Winston Churchill’s Parliamentary constituency—he says: “For some time past I have not felt that at my age it would be right for me to incur such new and indefinite responsibilities.
“It is necessary, therefore, in the public interest, that my successor should enter upon his duties in reasonable time to present himself and his programme to the nation as and when he chooses.”
Political observers said that this is further proof that a General Election is imminent.
Six hours after the 57-year-old Sir Anthony Eden had been installed as Britain’s forty-second Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, with tears m his eyes and his hand holding a cigar shaking, emerged from No. 10, Downing Street—the traditional home of Britain’s Prime Minister—for the last time as its occupant.
