INCREASE OF 11 PER CENT. ON YEAR

Quick-frozen fruit and vegetable production was recorded by the Census and Statistics Department for the first time last year for its survey of the fruit and vegetable preserving industry. According to the department’s statement on its March Abstract of Statistics, nine establishments 'engaged in these two lines were surveyed in 1953-54.

An average over the year of 205 persons worked in the industry, and produced 650 cwt of fruit valued at £7382 and 42,412 cwt of vegetables valued at £401,717. Although no information was collected in the previous year, the department estimates the production of quick-frozen vegetables m -that period as 23,000 cwt. Substantial increases also took place in the production of canned peas, canned beans in sauce, and tomato sauce: canned peas, 199,303 cwt (in 1952-53 137,839 cwt); canned beans in sauce, 45,083 cwt (39,968 cwt tomato sauce, 332.501 gallons (233.168 gallons). Production in the industry as a whole is estimated to have increased Vy about 11 ppr cent, over the previous year. '
